7-Eleven’s Free Slurpee Day Goes Bigger Than Ever

This annual promotion apparently really works for 7-Eleven. Slurpee sales, as well as sales of other 7-Eleven items, spike July 11 each year, Time.com reports. The free slurpee draws customers into the store on a grand scale, and people tend to buy small snacks to go with their free drinks. And, in many cases, the small taste of Slurpee has them coming back for a larger size.
In Vancouver, the rush for Slurpees turned violent after a customer dumped one of the high fructose-beverages over an employee's head, leading to a scuffle.
It happened at 2:30 p.m. at the 7-Eleven at Northeast 112th Avenue and 51st Circle.
Free Slurpee Day: Now with Bigger Slurpees!
In the past, the chain has given out free Slurpees in 7.11-ounce cups. However, 7-Eleven will now be going with regular small size cups, which contain a full 12 ounces of sweet, carbonated goodness.“Moms asked us for cups with lids,” Laura Gordon, vice president of marketing and brand innovation for 7-Eleven, told USA Today of the change. “That means less mess in the car.”
A new study claims pessimists live longer. That was the latest from The Society of Surprising Studies. I believe next it plans to announce that people who weigh over 500 pounds are healthier and that dumb people score higher on IQ tests.
Operation Chill was developed by 7-Eleven to encourage kids’ good behavior during the hot summer months when communities may experience increases in loitering, shoplifting and graffiti. Law enforcement agencies’ also use the coupons to support other community relations projects

Malian Troops Open France's Bastille Day Parade

Troops from 13 African countries that took part in the French-led war against al-Qaida-linked extremists in Mali marched with the French military during the Bastille Day parade in Paris on Sunday to honor their role in the conflict. U.N. troops in blue berets who are helping to stabilize the west African nation of Mali also paraded with thousands of other soldiers down the Champs-Elysees Avenue in France's annual tribute to military might. It marks the storming of the Bastille prison July 14, 1789, by angry Paris crowds that helped spark the French Revolution.
Tucked away in a 19th century cottage in Bungendore, a full house celebrated Bastille Day at Le Tres Bon restaurant on Sunday. The day of French national celebration marking the 1789 storming of the Bastille and subsequent revolution was celebrated with Champagne and chef Christophe Gregoire singing the national anthem La Marseillaise."You know James Cook discovered Australia, but La Perouse came one week after James Cook - so in one week, it could be French, this territory. I'm so upset with La Perouse actually," Gregoire joked as he prepared creme brulees.
A group of protesting Bulgarians has staged Saturday evening a reincarnation of Eugene Delacroix's historic painting of the July Revolution in France - Liberty Leading the People. The performance was both homage to the French people celebrating Bastille Day on July 14 and a show of respect for the position of the French and German Ambassadors, who issued a joint statement recently, insisting the voice of the people to be heard and Bulgaria to part with the oligarchic model of ruling the country.Bulgarian model and actress, Tanya Ilieva, portrayed the French Liberty on the 30th day of protests. She is best known by her leading female role in the movie Dzift of acclaimed Bulgarian director, Yavor Gardev.
The Montclair branch of the French Institute Alliance Francaise (FIAF) will host its annual "Bastille Day Celebration in Montclair" on Sunday, July 14, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Van Vleck House and Gardens, 21 Van Vleck St.The FIAF Montclair event will celebrate France's National Holiday which commemorates the storming of the Bastille and the birth of the modern French nation. FIAF's Bastille Day in Montclair unites French-speaking people and American Francophiles to revel in the flavors, sounds and joie de vivre of France.
In the early hours of Thursday morning French, Malian and African soldiers on the UN’s African “MINUSMA” peacekeeping operation in Mali marched down the Champs ElysΓ©es in central Paris in a rehearsal for Sunday’s July 14 “Bastille Day” parade. The first soldier in Sunday’s march will be Malian Colonel ElisΓ©e Jean Dao. Some 232 African soldiers from 13 nations will be in the vanguard of the parade. Taking the salute beside French President FranΓ§ois Hollande will be Malian interim President Dioncounda TraorΓ© and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

Apple's iOS 7 beta 3 should arrive on July 8

iOS 7 Beta 3 Arrives for Developers

Apple today released its third beta version of iOS 7, only two weeks after pushing out the second iteration of its newest operating system to developers.

The latest update includes fixes for pre-release bugs in Messages, iCloud, and AirPlay.

Specifically, problems with the new iCloud Keychain feature have been patched, as well as issues with the Find My iPhone and Bookmarks toggles, according to Apple Insider, which cited sources familiar with the release notes.

The Messages application, meanwhile, no longer presents an empty message list; Apple also addressed a flaw that caused the app to crash when the user viewed attachments on two separate threads.

A reportedly common issue that caused some apps to receive duplicate push notifications, or none at all, has been updated, and the app switcher now shows all suspended applications, Apple Insider said.

Apple iOS 7: The Most Exciting Features     VIEW ALL PHOTOS IN GALLERY Developers with an authorized Apple account can download the software update, and get back to building iOS 7-compatible applications before the OS's expected fall launch.

Apple unleashed iOS 7 to the developer community at its Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) on June 10. At the time, the updated OS was only available for the iPhone and iPod touch, however, so last month's beta update included a version for the iPad. Beta 2 also included the return of Voice Memo, the option to select a male voice for Siri, an overhauled Reminders app, and a variety of other small tweaks.

In beta 3, Cupertino also squashed a bug that would not save per-app settings in the Background App Refresh option. Additionally, custom Passcode Lock and Auto-Lock settings have been fixed, along with authorization alerts for Newsstand background downloads.

There is still more work for Apple before the general public can get their hands on the new operating system; developers told Apple Insider that a range of applications, including Calendar, Contacts, Notes, Safari, Passbook, and others, still have problems.

The iOS 7 update, scheduled to release this fall for iPhone 4 and up, iPad 2 and later, iPad mini, and the fifth-generation iPod touch, is "the biggest change to iOS since the iPhone," CEO Tim Cook said at WWDC.

Just two weeks after iOS 7 beta 2 arrived with iPad support, Apple has released iOS 7 beta 3 to registered developers.

Apple unveiled iOS 7 at WWDC 2013 on June 10 and offered its first beta to developers the same day. For now, the release cycle appears to be every two weeks for a new beta — which is faster and more consistent than iOS betas in the past.

The release notes for iOS 7 beta 3 don't mention any significant changes or feature additions — mostly bug fixes and performance enhancements. Still, early reports indicate some UI tweaks, especially when it comes to fonts and icons within apps.

I'm going to spend some time with iOS 7 on various test devices and will report on new tweaks or pertinent changes. For now, it's important to remember that Apple is still just getting started with iOS 7. What appears in the beta versions today may not necessarily represent the final look and feel of the shipping version, expected sometime this fall.

For now, I'm excited to see Apple releasing beta updates so quickly and on such a consistent cycle. I hope this continues because iOS 7 brings lots of changes for app developers and a more consistent update cycle means a better testing strategy.

Developers, let us know what you think of the new beta in the comments.
iOS 7 Beta 3 Tidbits: New App Download Animation, Thicker Fonts, Safari Improvements

Apple today released the third beta of iOS 7, which brings a number of improvements and bug fixes to the operating system. According to the release notes, double notifications have been resolved and AirPlay issues have also been fixed.

Several other minor enhancements have been bundled into the release, as noted by our forum members:

Redesigned Fonts - Fonts across a number of apps appear to have been tweaked to be thicker, using Helvetica Neue Regular instead of Ultra Light. This is most noticeable in the Messages app, where text appears to be bolded, but it can also be seen in the Weather app, the Notification Center, and the Settings menu. Panic co-founder @cabel has provided a GIF that demonstrates the differences.

Safari - Safari has had the .com button removed and replaced with a simple period button. The .com, .net, and .org domain extensions can be accessed by holding down on the button.

Status Bar - The Status Bar, which provides information on cellular connection strength, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and battery life has had its size slightly increased for better readability on the lock screen.

Lock Screen - When playing music, the lock screen will now display the time.

Music App - The Music app has seen a slight redesign with new icons and rearranged controls. Ratings have also been re-added.

Podcasts - Apple's Podcasts app is now functional.

Calendar - In the monthly view, the Calendar app has been updated to display small gray dots on days where events are scheduled.

Siri - A number of MacRumors forum members have noted that Siri’s voice now sounds more natural.

New App Download Animation - When installing an app, iOS 7 users will see a new animation that does away with download bars in favor of a more organic circular download timer.

Control Center - The clock located in the Control Center has seen yet another redesign, this time appearing in the original dark format that was removed during beta 2 in favor of a thinly outlined version.

The Bicycle is on its Way into a New Era

400,000 E-bikes will be sold in Germany this year alone, according to estimates by the Zweirad-Industrie-Verband (ZIV), the German bicycle industry association. Annual sales of E-bikes have increased eightfold in Germany over the past five years. The E-bike brings whole new set of possibilities for cyclists: for bike trekkers, it means the ability to cover greater distances and gain more altitude in a single day. For families, transporting larger volumes of cargo after a day's shopping or towing a child trailer becomes less daunting. The E-bike boom is also drawing more and more newcomers to the market. The list of leading providers of drive systems reads like a who's who of the electronics and mobility industries: In addition to Bosch and Panasonic, companies like Yahama are preparing to offer E-bike equipment. Yamaha has been able to secure the bicycle manufacturer Giant as a customer. The ZIV estimates that the market share of E-bikes will reach more than fifteen percent over the long term: "In the Netherlands, the E-bike's market share has already stabilized at this high level. We also expect similar developments in the German market in the next few years", reports ZIV general manager Siegfried Neuberger.

Show me your bike and I'll tell you who you are

The bicycle market also has other irons in the fire. The trend is towards the bike as an expression of the owner's lifestyle and personality. For example, non-conformists and individualists are inspired by the urban "fixie" subculture - the influence of the fixies' visual style upon stylish and yet safe city bikes is being seen more and more. Metronauts are putting their faith in clever folding bikes, whereas technocrats look to fast and agile pedelecs. In the meantime, contemporary families are using quick, load-carrying bikes to transport their children from A to B and do their shopping within the city.

    The right balance

Just like in other sports in which man and machine work together as a unit, technical developments have a special significance in cycling sports. In the mountain bike scene, a controversial discussion has broken out about the ideal wheel size. Whereas 26 inches were long considered ideal, then later it was 29 inches, leading mountain bike providers would now like to push 27.5 inch wheels into the forefront. Racing and mountain bikes are also becoming more and more like E-bikes: More cyclists are switching the gears of their racing bikes with electronic gear shifting systems. For the 2013 season, the Japanese equipment supplier Shimano has announced electronic gear hubs for sporty leisure bikes. Another digital premiere at the Eurobike will be at the stand of the suspension producer Fox Racing Show: Their new generation of suspension forks and rear wheel shock absorbers will communicate with each other electronically.

    Eurobike: The industry's trend

When the international cycling industry meets in a few weeks in Friedrichshafen, there will again be a lot of premieres and trends on display. The first three days of the Eurobike are reserved for industry visitors and the media. On the fourth day (Saturday, September 1, 2012) consumers will also be able to get a look at the newest innovations in the bicycle market. The Eurobike Demo Day for industry visitors and journalists will take place on Tuesday, August 28, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the AllgΓ€u.
